Intro to Mental Illness

Filed Under (Mental Illness) by Kr0n1ck on 09-11-2009

So I have decided what my main theme for this brand spanking new blog is going to be (drum roll……)  Mental Illness.

In my humble opinion Mental Illness is the most fascinating type of illness or disease, by that I mean such illness as Schizophrenia, Hallucinations, Epilepsy and many more. If you have read my About page you would know that I am of Russian origin, the phrase that stands for mental illness in Russian if translated in to English word for word would come out to be Soul Sickness. Now I am not saying that either phrase is more accurate than the other but I do think one completes the other. People that see things that aren’t there, are doing so on a mental level and it is so real to them that they actually react to it in the physical world. Its like dreaming but being wide awake.

There are many reasons why this happens to people. Most of these people have had some sort of trauma in their childhood, but not all. Sometimes these illnesses are caused by things such as loneliness or low self esteem.

And I will try to get into that a little more as we progress with the rest of the articles that I will try to research and post here for you guys.

So many great people have been suffering from these diseases and disorders, and not only survived but became great people of history, such as Isaac Newton, Abraham Lincoln, John Nash among many others, but I will get more detailed on this later. Here is some things that I have personally watched and read and loved:

A Beautiful Mind this is a movie about the great mathematician John Nash, one of my favorite movies of all time.

Sending in the Clowns by Kris Ralston, I bought this book at Kris’s book singing in Federal Way Mall. I found it pretty intense so give this a read a good book.

Secret Window  Johnny Depp Another great movie on something we call split personalities. Its really cheap and its good movie for the price check it out. (plus its got Johnny Depp)

These are just a few of things out there where people tried to depict their understanding of the subject or their opinion on the matter.

The most amazing thing, to me, about these diseases is that they are not physical in reality, but mentally a person cannot tell the difference. Lets take schizophrenia, one of the symptoms of schizophrenia is hallucinations. A person thinks he sees or hears something when in fact he does not. What happens is that one of the sense in human body sends a false signal to the brain which then gets interpreted by the brain and creates a real image or sound for the person. Pretty bizarre stuff.

For example a lot of people would swear they heard someone yelling in the middle of the night, and the scream was so real in fact that they got out of their bed got dressed whet to the place where they heard the scream and found nothing, but not giving up they ask the people around them did they or did they not hear the same thing and are astonished to hear that no one else heard what they heard.

That’s a hallucination of sound. Your hearing sense sends a signal to the brain saying “Hey I hear a scream this is what it sounds like” and the brain in turn says “Whoa that’s intense thanks for letting me know, I need to go over there and check it out.” That’s when you turn your head in the direction of the sound and try to process it.

The scary part comes when you realize that it did not happen and you are just hearing things. What is your next step? What do you do? That’s what I am going to try to research on these topics and hopefully give you guys some advice. Just to be clear I have not had any education in this field, these are just my thoughts and hypothesis, stuff that I came to by sitting countless nights wondering how all of this happens, and why.
